What Is CPAP Therapy?

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy for obstructive sleep apnea is our most effective treatment option. It is a silent device, that uses a mask interface (usually a mask under your nose) to deliver fresh room air to keep your airway open and facilitate normal breathing.

How CPAP Therapy Helps With Sleep Apnea

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure therapy is the simplest, most common, and most effective treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea. The mask you wear while sleeping will gently blow air into your airways, preventing your upper airway from collapsing. CPAP is the most effective way to keep your airway open and prevent airway collapses during sleep.

Benefits of CPAP Therapy to Treat Sleep Apnea

Without treatment, obstructive sleep apnea can affect every aspect of your life. The biggest benefits of undergoing CPAP therapy for sleep apnea include:

  • Improved Sleep – Without CPAP, the only way to correct apneas is brief awakenings (too brief to remember). CPAP prevents these harmful waking periods, prevents drops in oxygen levels, and prevents the resulting strain in your brain and cardiovascular system.
  • Brain Protection – CPAP has been shown to reduce the incidence or improve the consequences of strokes, dementia, mood disorders and more recently Parkinson’s disease.
  • Heart Protection – CPAP treatment can cause a modest reduction in blood pressure, and could prevent heart disease (arrhythmias, heart failure, etc.). In cases of A.Fib, it may prevent recurrence after the rhythm has been corrected by your cardiologist.
  • Nocturia – Defined by frequent urination at night. CPAP can help reduce the number of trips to the bathroom by mitigating the effects of sleep apnea in your kidneys.
  • A Healthier Version of You – The potential benefits of CPAP therapy are too many to count. But suffice it to say that it may help you achieve the healthiest version of you along with all the other things you can do to stay healthy, both physically and psychologically.

What to Expect When Treating Sleep Apnea With CPAP Therapy

  • Discussion about the importance of regular visits or remote monitoring options to track the progress of your treatment and your overall health

Common Myths and Misconceptions About CPAP Therapy

We encounter a lot of myths and misconceptions about CPAP therapy. None of these myths are true:

Myth: CPAP is Loud.

Reality: A properly worn CPAP should be silent. If in your experience this was not the case, we can help rectify this experience.

Myth: I sleep with my mouth open, and I will need a mask to cover my mouth.

Reality: We naturally breathe through our nose, and use our mouth only if needed. We like to keep it this way with CPAP. Success rate in studies show that nasal mask are most successful (even in mouth breathers) when compared to larger masks that also cover the mouth.

Myth: CPAP machines are so uncomfortable that they aren’t worth using.

Reality: Over 30 years have been dedicated to improving comfort and improving compliance. CPAP should be comfortable, and if you are not comfortable we can help.

Myth: If you use a CPAP machine, you will never be able to travel or maintain a relationship.

Reality: You can travel with your CPAP machine, and many people being treated with CPAP therapy are in relationships.

There are may other myths about CPAP therapy. Dr.Eusebio is a proficient CPAP user and will help you clarify and/or address any concerns. Any CPAP user who loves their CPAP device and would never again sleep without it was once concerned that CPAP was not for them. Feel free to ask around.

Why did you decide to open a solo practice?

I feel the only way we can do our best is if we dedicate all our energy and resources to what we do… help you sleep. Although multi-specialty practices are great in many circumstances, healthcare systems tend to focus their attention/resources to their most profitable services. At SAIF, sleep is our only focus.
